Bush and Obama, in Africa at the same time

They both have trips to Tanzania planned on July 2.

Coincidence? They say so. But intentional or not, their simultaneous presence sends a message about respect for term limits and the democratic process.

The two presidents don’t plan to meet, according to the article. But their wives will – at a forum for African first ladies.

This emphasizes the point subtly, which is good, since a hyped-up meeting would be patronizing and possibly counterproductive. There are plenty of African countries where this point could use emphasizing. But democracy is best served if African media – and people – see the image of and American president and ex-president, and make the connection themselves to their country.
