Why I like art

The stress builds up, and you are fighting not to be consumed by it – itself another source of stress. Then something finds its way right to your psyche, and breaks up the clouds that are keeping you from putting your situation in perspective. A quote, or song, or poem, or whatever it is that lifts you out of a mental ditch and reminds you of your purpose.

In this case, for me, it was a poem. Finding housing and settling into a new routine were particularly stressful – maybe because I expected them not to be. Then I opened a book of Robert Frost, and this stanza was just the perspective I needed.

The tree the tempest with a crash of wood
Throws down in front of us is not to bar
Our passage to our journey’s end for good,
But just to ask us where we think we are…
From “On a Tree Fallen Across the Road” by Robert Frost
